Super-Intelligent AI

IBM's Grady Booch spoke about super-intelligent AI, a system that can help humans in the long run. The AI isn't going to end up like the movie "The Odyssey" where Hal chooses to continue the mission over saving the people. Hal had complete control over everything something these systems will never be able to achieve. The super AI will be able to learn and reason much like people can through trial and error. Scientists will throw as much information at it as they can so it can learn what it is that they want it to and while it's doing that they can assist it by telling what is good or bad and what may be right or wrong. Despite what scientists believe about AI is that it poses no threats to people because it would have to compete with us while controlling the things around us. All we would have to do is remove it's power supply and that's the end of it.

Like many other technologies created, people fear it may also remove something that makes us who we are. For example, the telephone was created and improved upon to aid people with communication and at the same time was believed it would take away our ability to communicate face-to-face or in general. Another example was how people feared writing would take away our ability to memorize information. Now both of these are partially true, though they don't take away anything more than they aid us with(they actually help a lot more than previously thought). Super AI is a technology more or less the same as these. We can use it to replace the need to send people to areas where they would otherwise face their demise. The example given by Booch was that we are currently working on methods to colonize other planets such as Mars. If there was a catastrophe they would be on their own as it takes roughly 13 minutes to send a signal from Earth to Mars or vice versa. So in that time it would take people to communicate a Super AI would just need to assess the situation and pick from its experience the best path to take to continue without failing. I believe this would also work better than sending people there too .

The argument he gave was that Super AI is very beneficial if done correctly and by the right people. Through the use of humor he almost demanded that we use it because he mentioned how with any bad turn we can just remove the power supply from these machines to stop them. There was also the thought that if we give these things the ability to control things around us and try to rid earth of us. Now if we give them the ability to control everything down the line that may occur if it decides that is necessary, but we shouldn't give power of everything to one machine. Split up everything and either deny them access to communicate with one another or teach them that they cannot interfere with another machines mission. His tone being at times serious and others humorous really helped with timing and the things he said at times.

Overall, I believe we should be using this technology to further enhance the human experience and get us moving forward and branch out in our galaxy. We can't let our past dictate our future and we can't live as hermits afraid to do new things. We can however teach machines to go do things we are unable to do ourselves and trust them to get the job done.
